YouPoint on Samsung

Samsung saves battery and may put apps to sleep in the background. Then your family's location updates late. Here's what to turn on — once, in about 5 minutes.

6 steps · Android 11 and newer

The easiest way is in YouPoint itself. The app guides you step by step, and each step has an “Open settings” button that takes you straight to the right switch. Below is the same thing done by hand, in case the button didn't work or a step was skipped.

  1. Location “all the time”

Without this, the location only updates while YouPoint is open.

    SettingsAppsYouPointPermissionsLocationAllow all the time

On the same screen, turn on “Use precise location”.

  2. Battery — unrestricted most important

This is where Samsung decides whether YouPoint may work in the background. The app checks this step itself — you'll see a tick in “Device status”.

    SettingsAppsYouPointBatteryUnrestricted

  3. The “never sleeping” list

A separate Samsung list. It starts empty — apps are added with the “+” button at the top.

    SettingsBatteryBackground usage limitsNever sleeping apps+YouPoint

YouPoint isn't among the apps you can add? Leave it: the previous step is what matters, and the app has already checked it.

  4. Notifications

Without them, “Where are you?” and “I need help” won't arrive until you open the app.

    SettingsAppsYouPointNotificationsAllow notifications

  5. Physical activity

The phone can tell when the person is walking or driving, and uses less battery.

    SettingsAppsYouPointPermissionsPhysical activityAllow

  6. Car optional

Android calls this “Nearby devices”. YouPoint only hears that the phone has connected to a car — and notices the start of a journey straight away. It doesn't search for devices around you.

    SettingsAppsYouPointPermissionsNearby devicesAllow

  7. Alarms and reminders

    Needed for medication reminders.

    SettingsAppsYouPointAlarms and remindersAllow

  8. Full-screen display

So that medication reminders and the “Is all well?” question after a fall show up straight away, even on a locked screen. Android 14 and newer only.

  9. Care service

Protects the child's settings and works together with the site filter. It only sees the name of the open app and the website address — it doesn't store or send what's on the screen.

Needed for scam protection (YouPoint Max): during a suspicious call it shows a warning. It only sees the name of the open app — it doesn't store or send what's on the screen.

Turned on in YouPoint itself — at the “Protection” step, together with an adult.

    SettingsAccessibilityInstalled appsYouPoint: care serviceOn

The switch is grey and says “Restricted setting”? YouPoint's app page → ⋮ at the top right → “Allow restricted settings” → confirm with your fingerprint or PIN and try again.

  10. Removal protection

So that YouPoint can't be removed from the phone without the parent code.

Turned on in YouPoint itself — at the “Protection” step, together with an adult.

  11. Site filter

Turned on in YouPoint itself — at the “Protection” step, together with an adult. If it doesn't work, the app will offer another way at the same step.

  12. Screen time

    So that app limits work.

Turned on in YouPoint itself — at the “Protection” step.

Check everything at once

YouPoint → “Profile” → “Device status”. It shows what's on and what's missing.

Why Samsung does this

Like other phones, Samsung puts apps that haven't been opened for a while to sleep, to save battery. That's fine for most apps. For YouPoint it means your family's location only updates when someone opens the app. YouPoint itself is careful with battery: it updates the location often on the move and rarely when the person is at home.

Questions from Samsung owners

The location only updates when I open YouPoint

Most often the “Battery — unrestricted” or “Location all the time” step hasn't been done. Check them and look at “Profile” → “Device status”.

The care service switch is grey

That's how Android protects accessibility settings. YouPoint's app page → ⋮ at the top right → “Allow restricted settings” → confirm with your fingerprint or PIN.

Is this the same as Samsung's parental controls?

YouPoint has parental controls too (YouPoint Max): app limits and blocking, a site filter for the whole phone, and removal protection with a parent code. Samsung's built-in controls work through Google Family Link and manage only the child's phone. YouPoint brings the whole family together: “Where are you?”, “I need help”, tasks for coins and care for older relatives. More about parental controls
